There were 168 persons of school age living in Crawford County.
School Districts, 15 in number, were organized. School was often held in a home or a store. |
| 1871 |
A school was opened in Nishnabotna Township 1/2 mile east of Aster. A town the Milwaukee Railroad would plot in 1882. |
| 1873 |
The above school was moved to a site 1 mile south of where Manilla would be established in 1886. It was the first known school in the area. Later other schools were built. Usually one school for every 4 sections of land. |
| 1886 |
A new town called Manilla was laid out by the Milwaukee Railroad. |
| 1887 |
There were over 200 buildings in Manilla, but no school for an estimated 100 school age children. The Presbyterian Church was leased and a curtain was used to divide it into 2 rooms. |
| 1889
The first school building was built and school districts from one mile north and one mile south of Manilla were combined to form The Manilla Independent School District. The building contained 4 classrooms with 2 classes in each room.
